Blog Walk: Best Chance for Indonesia to Win the Miss Universe Title Next Year?

Good English But Poor In Bahasa Indonesia

Remember Qory Sandioriva, the Miss Indonesia (Puteri Indonesia) 2009 who went on to represent Indonesia at the 2010 Miss Universe pageant where a poor command of English saw her dropping out of the race early in the competition?  Well Nadine Alexandra Dewi Ames, the Miss Indonesia (Puteri Indonesia) 2010 has no problem with the English language – her problem is really in her mastery of Bahasa Indonesia.

About Nadine Alexandra Dewi Ames

What do we know about Nadine Alexandra Dewi Ames, the girl who will represent Indonesia in the 2011 Miss Universe pageant?  For a start we know that she is 19 years old, having been born on May 23, 1991.  Although she represented the Jakarta city provincial government (DKI Jakarta 4) during the 2009 Puteri Indonesia pageant, Nadine Alexandra Dewi Ames was actually born and raised in Britain. That’s why she is good in English (and French too), but poor in Bahasa Indonesia. Nadine Alexandra Dewi Ames is presently a student at Bath Spa University in Britain. She took a course in Film and Screen Studies and Nadine Alexandra Dewi Ames now has an acting role in Inikah Cinta, an Indonesian soap opera.

Referring to her poor command of Bahasa Indonesia, Nadine Alexandra Dewi Ames said: “I apologize to Indonesian people because my Indonesian is not good enough.”  And then she added: “The important think is that I can communicate. I am studying every day to improve my language skills.”

The Miss Indonesia (Puteri Indonesia) 2009 Pageant

The 15th Miss Indonesia (Puteri Indonesia) 2010 pageant was organized by Yayasan Puteri Indonesia (YPI). The theme of the 2010 Miss Indonesia pageant was: “Loving the Nation through the Usage and Appreciation of the Works of the Nation’s Children.” There were altogether 38 contestants, and Nadine Alexandra Dewi Ames came out top.  For that achievement, she gets to represent Indonesia in the 2011 Miss Universe pageant in Vietnam. Nadine Alexandra Dewi Ames will also get a car, and a salary for 1 year from PT Mustika Ratu.

The 1st runner up was Reisa Kartika Sari from Yogyakarta, who was also conferred the title of Miss Environment 2010. The 2nd runner up was Alessandra Khadijah Usman who became Miss Tourism Indonesia 2010.

Preparing For The 2011 Miss Universe Pageant

Having won the right to represent Indonesia at the 2011 Miss Universe Pageant, Nadine Alexandra Dewi Ames is fully aware that no Indonesia contestant has never won the Miss Universe title before. But she is determined to do better than the past Puteri Indonesia winners.  Nadine Alexandra Dewi Ames said: “I have learnt to ensure that Indonesia can do better in the future.”  Then she added: “For the future I know it’s really not easy for me, especially I have to carry the name of Indonesia to the Putri Universe. I’ve learned how to make Indonesia a country that is more intense than now.”

But having been born and raised in Britain, wouldn’t she be a bit outdated on Indonesian affairs?  Nadine Alexandra Dewi Ames said: “I will try as soon as possible to learn more about everything. I know the period of quarantine at the Miss Universe will be more varied and more difficult than during quarantine to advance to the Puteri Indonesia. So I had to learn much more abundant.”

Think About It

Why is it that no Indonesian contestant has ever won the Miss Universe title? It is not as if there were no winners from this region.  Indeed neighboring countries Phillippines, Thailand, Japan and India have had 2 winners each who wore the Miss Universe crown.  So what’s hindering Indonesia from winning it?  For one thing, it’s the language.  The experience of Qory Sandioriva at last year’s Miss Universe pageant illustrates this clearly. Her English was just not good enough, and for some reasons, she did not choose to use a translator.  The other reason may have something to do with the the fact that Indonesian contestants invariably choose to wear a one-piece swim suit in deference to the conservative Muslim population whereas most other contestants wear 2-piece swimsuits. To what extent this have caused a negative impact in the judging is not known.  But now, with Nadine Alexandra Dewi Ames, will this be the best chance for Indonesia to win the Miss Universe title next year?

The Miss Universe 2011 Pageant is not in Vietnam but in Brazil and also according to what Nadine Ames said in one of her video, she said that she was actually born in Indonesia but she spent her last three years in England.
