Miss Indonesia to stump for orangutans

Miss Indonesia Nadine Alexandra Dewi Ames will attend a screening of Nénette, a documentary about orangutans, at the Jakarta French Film Festival this weekend, according to a press release made available on Thursday.

The film focuses on the everyday life of Nénette, a Borneo orangutan, who is also a star at the Parisian zoo where she has lived most of her life. The documentary was scripted by Peter Brandt Nielsen.

“While Nénette has lived a long, healthy life in the care of the Paris Zoo, it’s better to ensure that all Borneo orangutans, an endangered species, are able to survive in the wild,” Nadine said in the press release.

The film, she added, was a wonderful opportunity to observe the fascinating intelligence and sensitivity of orangutans, which share 97.4 percent of their DNA with humans.

The screening is scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Platinum XXI cinema at the fX Lifestyle Center mall in Jakarta. Experts will also hold a discussion about their efforts to rescue hundreds of orangutans from captivity in East and Central Kalimantan and their works of rehabilitating and releasing them back into the wild.
