Miss Indonesia to Highlight Orangutan Plight at French Film Festival

Beauty queen conservation advocate to attend orangutan documentary screening.

Bogor, April 7: Reigning Miss Indonesia, Nadine Alexandra Dewi Ames, will attend the Opening of the Festival Sinema Perancis (French Film Festival) on Friday, April 8, 6:45 pm, as a special guest of the festival organizers. Nadine is attending the event on behalf of the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation (BOS Foundation) to highlight the screening Saturday, April 9, at 2:00pm, of the acclaimed French documentary film Nenette.

Nénette, a Borneo orangutan, is the star of the Parisian zoo where she has lived most of her long life. She is a mother of four and has survived three mates, and she bonds only with a few select keepers. The camera rests throughout on Nénette and the other apes in everyday situations. We only see the visitors as occasional reflections in the glass, but we hear their recorded comments and conversations alongside interviews with the zoo keepers.  The award-winning film was written by Peter Brandt Nielsen.

Nadine, a passionate advocate for orangutan conservation, will attend the Saturday screening along with experts from the BOSF, who will talk about their work in rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing back to the wild hundreds of ex-captive orangutans in East and Central Kalimantan (Borneo).

“While Nenette has clearly lived a long, healthy life in the care the Paris Zoo, the ultimate goal of the BOS Foundation is to try to make certain that the Borneo orangutan species is able to survive in the wild. Currently it is an endangered species and the BOS Foundation is the largest organization in the world dedicated to the survival of the species.”  said Nadine.

A film school student, Nadine says that Nenette is a superbly sensitive documentary about a truly tragic figure. While it is clear that Nenette, as all orangutans, would be much more at home in their original Borneo jungle habitat, many displaced and captive orangutans are unable to be returned to the wild, she added.

The BOS Foundation, according to Nadine, is the largest organization in the world dedicated to rehabilitating younger captive orangutans and releasing them to their native habitat in the forests of Borneo. If the BOS Foundation had existed when Nenette first became displaced, her life might have been very different, she added.  “The film, however, is a wonderful opportunity to view up close the fascinating intelligence and sensitivity of orangutans, who share some 97.4% of the same DNA as humans,” she added.

The French Film Festival was started on April 1st and will last until April 17th. The Nenette screening itself will be on Saturday April 9th 2011, 14:00 at FX Plaza Platinum XXI, Jakarta.
